Tyneside Star was given the number 2455 in Sowerby’s Pattern Book, first appearing in 1933 with the simple description “Dish Round, Flanged and Square”. It then re-appeared in Sowerby’s Tynesyde (sic) Glassware catalogue, c. 1940s, under the page 1 headline “NEW ATTRACTIONS” (which actually referred to the introduction of Sowerby’s new Rosalin pink colour).
Tyneside Star is an exterior pattern. It is found only on marigold bowls, in several shapes: flared (sometimes also ruffled), square, round (may also be cupped in). The diameter of the bowls varies from around 9½ inches for the flared bowls, to 7 inches for the round ones. The star design is deeply moulded on the base and lower part of the sides, surrounded by ribs or narrow panels. The edge of the bowl is serrated / fluted.
Tyneside Star was also supplied drilled, with a central hole for mounting etc., or with chromium fittings as a 2-tier cake-stand or comport. The cake-stand (which is not yet confirmed in Carnival Glass) comprised a standard large bowl and a smaller 6 inch version.
