Marigold

This wonderful little vase stands just under 5½ inches high and is cylindrical in shape. Its 2½ inch base is ground and has an impressed star (see below).
The pattern motifs – whirling star and an elongated cross – are reminiscent of patterns from Riihimaki (such as Starburst or Starburst and Crown, and Jupiter). In fact this little beauty was made by Iittala, and features in that company’s 1934 catalogue in two vase forms – a flared version (#3897) and one that is straight up (#3898), as shown above, right.
The vase is the only shape known, and marigold is the only colour known.
This is the very first known vase in this pattern. Carnival Glass from Iittala is very scarce indeed, with only a handful of (Carnival) patterns attributed to that factory, so this is a very significant find indeed.
