This unusual marigold item was discovered by Claudio Deveikis, and it is marked with the moulded name ESBERARD RIO - see right. It is 14cm by 12cm in size (5.5 x 4.7 inches). Our recent investigations have uncovered an astonishing revelation - this piece is an almost exact replica of an English item made by the firm George Davidson & Co., of Gateshead on Tyne. The piece that the Esberard item replicates is a trefoil sweetmeat dish. The Esberard rendition is faithful, right down to the complex handle (an intricate piece of mouldwork) and the three little peg feet. Close study of the two items reveals subtle differences in the moulded pattern that a quick glance would not spot. |
Davidson's trefoil sweetmeat is a rare piece, known in clear glass and pale blue glass (shown below)
Known examples are marked with the moulded Davidson trademark, a demi-lion. The date of manufacture is not certain, but is most likely late 19th century.
Thanks to Frederick Cooper for the photos and information of the clear Davidson piece. Image of the blue sweetmeats, courtesy and copyright Rob Young.
