This is a rare vase; seldom seen in any colour, and now discovered for the first time, in rich marigold Carnival Glass. This beauty was found by Maria Mazurek, and we are honoured to feature her photo of this beautiful vase here.
Królowa Maria (translated as Queen Maria) stands a majestic 12 inches high – the tallest of Hortensja’s pressed glass vases. The polished base on this Art Deco beauty is hexagonal – the curving profile almost suggesting a corset waist.
Illustrated in the Hortensja’s 1936 catalogue, the vase had the number 435 – it was not given a pattern name. Królowa Maria is reported in pink, green, blue and amber glass, all examples of which are very hard to find.
Background information on Huta Hortensja (Hortensja glassworks).
The Hortensja glassworks was situated in Piotrkow Trybunalski, in the heart of Poland, some 70 miles south west of Warsaw and around 130 miles north of Cracow. It was one of two glass works begun by Emil(e) Haebler (also written Hoebler and Heibler) in 1889. Named after his daughter, Hortense, it produced household glass. Some was press-moulded and some was also blown.
Carnival production took place c. 1920s into the 1930s. In 1945, after World War 2, Hortensja became a state-owned enterprise. The factory became bankrupt in c. 2004 and closed.
