Collectors Facts - Prism and Pleats, maker unknown
Most of the examples of this geometric style bowl have been found in Australia. Three sizes of bowl are currently reported: 5", 8½” and this massive 12" (30cm) example illustrated. A cake plate is also known, complete with a metal rod / holder. Andrew Mitchell reports that the bowl has a ground base. Marigold is the only colour currently reported. We included this intriguing pattern in our Encyclopedia of European Carnival Glass, as we felt that – stylistically – it was possibly European (despite all examples so far having been found in Australia). The shapes it has been reported in speak to this pattern being European Originally, we did not know its date of production, but now, through our intensive research, we can add a date! The two ads shown here appeared in the Australian press in 1926 (right) and 1929 (far right), at a time when a lot of imported European glass (including Carnival Glass) was also being featured. Research continues. |
UPDATE - January 2021
This extract below is from a 1926 Foy & Gibson catalogue (in Australia), and it has a most interesting depiction of the Prism and Pleats bowl, plus an even more interesting inclusion – a covered sugar in the identical design. The bowl is shown as item 11107, described as a “Neatly designed flunged-shape Bowl, measuring 7 inches across; very nicely patterned”. Above it is item 11103, a sugar basin with cover, which has the same pattern.
Also of interest in a bowl, item 11109, which has a similar pattern concept to Prism and Pleats, but features a cross-hatched hobnail motif in the ”eye-shaped” sections instead of the hobstar.
Neither the maker nor the country of production is noted in the description. As there are items on the full page that we believe were produced in Australia, the USA and Europe, there still remain no clues can be found regarding maker. Research continues ...
