Collectors Facts - Metro vase (OMN No. 222), Westmoreland

Metro Vase, Westmoreland
Shapes:
Swung vase
Colours:
Marigold

Back in 1997, we were at a Carnival convention in the USA, when a collector came into our room with a most unusual vase. She explained that it was not known to her, and she asked if we could identify it. We were as mystified as she was. It was a splendid, marigold, swung vase that stood 12.75 inches high and had a 3.25 inch base. The top was most distinctive, with alternate large and small “flames” (scallop-shaped flutes).

The pattern was somewhat distorted by the “swinging” (pulling out) of the vase, but there were clear groups of diamonds in larger and smaller sizes.

Our old black and white photo of the distinctive top section of the vase is shown here for you on the right.

The vase was given the name of the owner, Shirley Metro.

For many years the maker of this unusual swung vase remained a mystery. However, now we know that it was made by Westmoreland, and it was shown in their catalogues as No. 222 Swung Vase.

Early American Pattern Glass expert and researcher, Sid Lethbridge, reports that it was shown in Westmoreland’s catalogues in 1912 and 1917, but he feels it could date earlier.
