Hexagon and Cane, made by Imperial
This rare pattern appears in Imperial's Catalogue No. 200 (from 1925), in the shape of a covered sugar, as shown above, right. As you can see by the catalogue illustration, it has the pattern number M 490 (sugar and cover) and was described as "Bright Iridescent Glass". It was offered in "Rubigold" (which was Imperial's term for marigold Carnival), which was also confirmed by the " M " in the catalogue number - M being Imperial's colour code for Rubigold. A rare 8" bowl is also known in this same pattern, and the catalogue illustration is below. |
Both covered sugar and bowl are known only in marigold. It's interesting to note that a covered sugar was sourced in South America, suggesting that these items were possibly exported.
Confusion with Imperial's #520
There has been some confusion in the past regarding the Hexagon and Cane (#490) pattern: a visually similar pattern - Imperial's #502 - has been incorrectly identified as Hexagon and Cane.
Crucially, they are not the same, and to spot the difference, look at the motifs in the long ovals that flank the central hexagon and cane. The Hexagon and Cane #490 pattern has a file motif above and below the central hobstar. On the #520 pattern, there are only hobstars (three in a row). See below.

Currently, we are not aware of and cannot confirm any examples of Imperial's #502 in Carnival (and therefore it does not have a Carnival pattern name).
