Fenton Flute in celeste discovered in England
There is a very rare and unusual vase that is almost hidden in an amazing display of Carnival Glass vases on show at the annual get-together of a UK Carnival Glass club held in September, 2009.
We had organised the display for the club to accompany our seminar on vases, and (as usual), members had brought along some of their favourite pieces of Carnival for the display. We were unaware beforehand which pieces members were bringing, so many of the items that were carefully unwrapped were surprises.
And what surprises! As the display began to be assembled, and more vases were brought for inclusion, we spotted one in the middle of the display that we had not seen before. Nestled between an Imperial Loganberry vase and a Millersburg Hobnail vase, was a lovely celeste blue piece. You can see the lovely stretchy pastel iridescence on the vase. The shape was familiar, but not in celeste, surely? Well, yes, it was indeed a celeste Fenton Flute vase - the distinctive foot of the Fenton Flute vase can be seen in the photo on the far right.
To the best of our knowledge, it is the first reported in that rare colour. The vase was brought by Brian and Roni Randall.
A beautiful and unusual vase that we are privileged to be able to record here for the first time.

There is another very unusual and rare vase at the front of the group photo at the top of this article* - did you spot this Dugan Panelled Treetrunk squatty vase in amethyst, brought Alan Henderson.

Vases in celeste blue are not easy to find. Above, we present not one, but two vases in Fenton’s Fine Rib – in celeste.
Only a handful of these are known. |
* Other lovely vases on show in that photo include a marigold Brockwitz Asters (bottom right), Dugan’s Formal in amethyst, an Imperial Thumbprint and Oval, a swung Palm Beach (U S Glass), as well as a white Corn vase and an aqua opal Daisy and Drape both by Northwood.
