Confusing Dugan Patterns
Triplets, Daisy Dear, Single Flower and Single Flower Framed
There are four Dugan designs that are so easy to get mixed up. The four patterns are Daisy Dear, Triplets, Single Flower and Single Flower Framed.
All are exterior patterns, all can be found on 7 to 8 inch bowls, and all are found in marigold (or peach opal for Single Flower and Single Flower Framed), which is often rather lightly iridised. (Amethyst is known, plus a few scarce white ones). Often, the moulded exterior patterns are shallow and lightly defined.
Many years ago, as these four patterns patterns can be very hard to see, they often got clumped together and were referred to as Ghost Flowers.
But there’s a really easy way to see which one you have, provided that you can see the underside of the base (known as the marie/collar base). These four designs have very different patterns right there – underneath. You can see them in the very rough, sketch drawings shown below.
As well as the easy “Spot The Difference” guide above, here are a few notes to help you spot any further differences.
Daisy Dear has four lots of flower-leaf motifs around the exterior. On the collar base (see sketch) Daisy Dear has 5 round petals on the flower and a beaded ring around its centre.
Triplets has three lots of flower-leaf motifs around the exterior. On the collar base Triplets has 6 pointed petals. These shapes are also echoed in those flowers round the outside.
Single Flower has several groups of flowers around the exterior. On the collar base Single Flower has a loose-leaf flower effect with 9 long pointed leaves and three tiny flower heads. The little flower heads on stems are easily overlooked and can almost disappear. Single Flower can be found decorated with an enamelled design on the plain interior
Single Flower Framed is the only one of this group that also has an interior design – featuring rays. The exterior design has several groups of flowers and some stippling. On the collar base is a distinctive, yet curious, triple lobed design.
