The Butterfly Catcher pattern is one of several "marigold and clear" items where the main pattern is an intaglio moulded design that is cut into the underside of the base. The actual design is exceptionally detailed: it is in marigold, and the rest is clear. The base is also ground and highly polished.
Although these two plates have different designs, we believe they were part of the same "set", intended to be used together. The designs are complementary and they both have the same moulded pattern around the perimeter of the plates - a design of interlocking or overlapping circles on the surrounding clear glass. It is called Ring-Around, which is characterised by overlapping rings punctuated with teardrops. Other shapes use the Ring-Around pattern - some have only that one pattern (such as the Ring-Around vase), whereas others also have an intaglio design on the base. Quite a variety of these intaglio designs were used, some simple geometrics, while others like the Butterfly Catcher, were much more complex. Our research established that the Ring-Around pattern was made by Zabkowice, Poland, and it is shown in their catalogues. On account of this, we are confident to attribute the Butterfly Catcher to Zabkowice. The "marigold and clear" designs are often grouped together as the "Golden" Patterns - and there are more examples of these "Golden" patterns and other shapes that are attributed to Zabkowice because of the Ring-Around design. We have a major four page feature on all the Golden Patterns that are known to date. Here is the link: Golden Treasures. |
