Bleeding Heart (Double) Salt, also known as Flaming Heart, and originally called Tauno by Riihimaki. RARE.
This double salt features a central handle or finial in the shape of a sacred (or bleeding) heart. There is a pattern of interlocking hobstars encircle the two round salt dips. This is the only reported shape in Carnival: it is 4¾ inches (12 cm) high at the handle, 5½ inches (14cm) long, and 2½ inches (6cm) wide.

The very dark example on the left of the picture is probably green (but it looks almost black), then blue (centre) and marigold. The Bleeding Heart double salt is illustrated in the early 1915 Riihimäki catalogue where it was given the number 2600. The original Riihimaki name is Tauno, which translates to mean “peaceful” in Karelian Finnish. The double salt was also shown in the 1939 Riihimaki catalogue where it was given the number 5750. This is a seldom seen item. Note that the hobstar pattern around the salt is very similar to that seen on the later Korona ashtray, the difference being the absence of a central button in the star motif. |
