Leaf – Brockwitz
This elongated pickle dish was made by Brockwitz and has been called “Leaf”.
It was shown in the Brockwitz 1921 catalogue (above, courtesy Siegmar Geiselberger) as a Gurkenschale, in two sizes, 13 inches x 4.75 inches (33 cm x 12 cm) and 9.5 inches x 4 inches (24 cm X 10 cm).
The example shown here is the smaller of the two. The Gurkenschale was also illustrated in Brockwitz 1915 catalogue, but only in the larger size.
So, what’s a Gurkenschale? It’s a dish for gherkins. Not everyone will be familiar with gherkins, but in fact they are the same thing as Dill Pickles! Gherkins are small cucumbers that have been pickled. Another name for them is cornichons, although that generally refers to very small cucumbers.
